Description
This painting was created to challenge the misconception that black women in headscarves represent unattractiveness. For years, racist depictions, like those of Aunt Jemima, portrayed her in a headscarf, which was mocked until 1989 when her image was updated with a perm and pearls.
What do you see when you think of me?
A figure cloaked in mystery
With a gaze and hair covered?
Yet…..
You fail to see
The dignified persona
Of a woman wrapped in maturity
The scarf on my head
Does not cover my brain.
