2022 Grant Opportunities for African Creatives

As we wrap up the second month in 2022 and the year gets in full swing, we believe that as a Creative/Artist, you are already starting to make some big plans for the things you would like to accomplish in 2022.

Maybe you have a goal of featuring your artwork in some of the top art galleries in the world, or maybe you just want to further develop your skills and be able to put out more work than you did in 2021 and other previous years.

Whatever your goal is, getting access to the right kind of opportunities is so important. It can make a world of difference in how fast you move and how much you can get done.

We have curated below a list of 5 amazing grant opportunities for African Creatives that you can take advantage of this year and move to the next level of your career!

1. 8th International Marianne Brandt Award

The 8th International Marianne Brandt Award 2022 asks artists and designers how that which connects us with other living beings and habitats can be newly discovered and designed. We are looking for projects, images, and texts on cooperative, aesthetic, metaphorical, and poetic exchanging relationships with other organisms and natural existences.

What are the approaches to nature that are relevant for artists and designers today? How can we foster, show or celebrate moments that connect us?

Prize: 5.000 € – 15.000 € in each category, 60 nominated works exhibited and published in catalogue

Categories

  • Details Project: A product, a study or image documentation with a maximum of three variations can be submitted.
  • Details Photography: Three single images or a series of a maximum of five images can be submitted. Series have to be labelled as such.
  • Details Text: Texts can be submitted with up to 5,000 characters in German and English.

Deadline: March 3, 2022

2. emBrace Pattern Design Competition

emBrace is looking for fresh new repeating pattern designs that are modern and fashionable and is calling all artists from across the world to participate. The winning pattern designs will be transferred onto the surface of back braces and worn by teenage girls. Winning entries are also eligible for cash prizes totalling $5,000. Additionally, the winning pattern will be included in the upcoming Friddles back brace design collection.

Prize: Multiple cash prizes totalling $5,000

Eligibility: Accepting applications from anywhere across the world

Categories: Digital media, graphic design, web print, pattern design

3. Innovate Grant

The Innovate Grant is one created specifically for Artists and Photographers. The application process is simple and straightforward their grant cycles are open 4 times a year (Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter) giving Creatives more opportunities to access the support they need. Innovate Grant provides $550.00 grants that serve as sparks of financial support that ignite creative development for artists.

Prize: $550

Eligibility: Accept and encourage submissions from applicants 18 years or older, from around the world within art & photography categories

4. Artist Grant

Artist Grant runs 4 grant cycles per year (quarterly) and provides a $500 USD grant to one visual artist each grant cycle. Once an artist wins a grant, they are not allowed to apply again. They also award 2nd and 3rd place runners-up with $100 USD each. Runners-up may apply again in a future grant cycle.

They usually notify each applicant of the results at the conclusion of their review process (approximately 2-3 weeks after each deadline) and will display the name and work of each grant recipient and a link to their website (if applicable) on their website and social media platforms

Prize: $500 (2nd & 3rd Runner-up – $100 each)

Eligibility: Visual artists 18 and older from anywhere in the world – any media may apply: painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture (of any type of material), ceramics, mixed/multiple media, installation, and other new or alternative media.

Upcoming Deadlines: April 15, July 15, and October 15

5. The Hopper Prize

The Hopper Prize was established to provide grants, visibility, and career-enhancing validation to artists who demonstrate a serious commitment to their work. They provide unrestricted cash grants in the amount of $3,500 and $1,000 to artists around the globe. 

The Hopper Prize views the field of visual art in its broadest and most inclusive sense and therefore make their awards available to artists working in any media. Submissions are accepted twice per year. During each submission cycle, we offer 2 grants in the amount of $3,500 and 4 grants in the amount of $1,000.

Prize: $3,500 for 2 artists & $1,000 for 4 artists

6. The Awesome Foundation

The Awesome Foundation is an ever-growing worldwide community devoted to forwarding the interest of awesome in the universe. Created in the long hot summer days of 2009 in Boston, the Foundation distributes $1,000 grants every month, no strings attached, to projects and their creators. At each fully autonomous chapter, the money is pooled together from the coffers of ten or so self-organizing “micro-trustees” and given upfront in cash, check, or gold doubloons.

Prize: $1000

Eligibility: International

Deadline: Rolling (Applications accepted every month)
