2022 International Residency Opportunities for African Creatives

It’s so crazy just how fast the year is moving! It’s the start of a new quarter and a great opportunity to reflect on the past quarter, celebrate successes, embrace lessons learned and go after new goals for the rest of the year.

That’s why we thought we’d share some new opportunities that African Artists can take advantage of to unlock the next career level. This is a sequel to our post on 2022 Grant Opportunities for African Creatives.

Below, we present to you 5 prestigious international residency opportunities available at the moment.

1. The British Council and the School of Digital Arts (SODA) Residency

The British Council and the School of Digital Arts (SODA) at Manchester Metropolitan University are seeking 15 African Artists (18-35) looking to gain further experience in digital arts during an exciting residency.

The purpose of the residency is to create opportunities for collaboration between selected artists from countries in Africa as well as the UK, connecting them to industry partners and offering training and skills development courses.

The residency will support two artists in the use of emerging technology in their practice. This pilot programme will work with SODA’s neighbours in Manchester – the local communities of Hulme and Moss Side – to facilitate strategic engagement with local communities through an international Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) program.

2. The Ark Project

The Ark Project is a biennial international artist residency program realized in 2015 with a focus on creation, presentation, and documentation of contemporary art that engages discovery, transformation and innovation.

Every two years the program travels to a new city across the globe and one artist is invited into the collective for an evolving curatorial project.

The program’s mission is to explore the intersection of nature, art, and consciousness through visual art to create structures that allow for an evolution of harmony and connection with the natural world.

Location: Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, USA

Residency Duration: 1-2 weeks | September 15th to September 29th, 2022

3. Belgrade Art Studio Residency

Belgrade Art Studio Residency is a non-profit international art program designed to bring talented artists, creative practitioners, researchers and writers from around the world to experience a unique cultural environment dedicated to art. Selected artists are invited to live and work in a specially designed studio for a period of up to 6 months. By bringing the creators of art to a unique setting, the Program aims to situate art at the very heart of historical Belgrade.

Belgrade Art Studio invites artists, curators and researchers from around the world to apply online for a residency in this extraordinary city. Different forms of art are welcome to the artist residency, to explore the arts in Belgrade, Serbia’s most vibrant city: painting, drawing, photography, music, filmmaking, video art, writing, conceptual art and research. Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged.

Location: Belgrade, Serbia

Residency Duration: Residencies range from 3 weeks to 6 months

4. Willowtail Residency

Willowtail offers one-week to three-week residencies during the entire year for scholarship-funded, partially-scholarship-funded, and fully self-funded residencies for practitioners in The Arts and Ecology. Each resident is required to deliver a community offering within one calendar year of their residency. Whether this takes the form of a lecture, presentation, demonstration, teaching, a slideshow of work, exhibition in the local community, is up to the resident and director.

Location: Willowtail Springs Nature Preserve and Education Center, Colorado, USA

Application Deadline: Rolling – accepting applications all year round

Residency Duration: Residencies range from 1 week to 3 weeks during an entire year

Application Fee: Free

Stipend: $3000 per week (fully funded), $1500 per week (partially funded)

5. L’AiR Arts Residency

L’AiR Arts residency program grounds its commitment to the contemporary arts from a historical perspective. Located in Montparnasse, known as a historic hub for international artists during the 20th century Ecole de Paris period, their residency program is dedicated to the historical legacy of this prolific period of intercultural and artistic exchange.

​In 2021, L’AiR Arts initiated a cultural heritage project of preserving and restoring the last atelier of the prominent artist’s community of Cité Falguière. Following the extensive research and restoration program, the Atelier is scheduled to reopen in 2022 as an International Arts Research Residency – keeping its original purpose and the name, Atelier 11. A new emblematic home for L’AiR Arts, the Atelier 11 residency will welcome local and international professionals for solo and duo projects, that will run parallel to international group programs, partner residencies, and events open to a broader community.

Residency Duration: 2 weeks to 2 months; October 1– August 1, 2022

Stipend: Funded residency (that may also include travel and/or research and material stipend)
Subsidized residency: 350 euros per week
Full cost residency: 1050 euro per week – for applicants who are able to raise their own funds or have already secured funding elsewhere to help us cover the costs.
