Khulekani‘s Biography

Khulekani Mkhize is a South African artist born on 9th December 1988. He was raised by a single mother in a village called Barnabas at Umzizmkhulu Kwa-Zulu Natal where he started his lower classes.

As a child, Khulekani would play with charcoal and use it to draw lines across the walls of his mother’s house which marked the beginnings of his passion for Art.

In 2010 he joined Velobala Art Program hosted by DUT at the city campus after matriculation at Isibonelo High School. He studied Art and Design at Thekwini College, Durban in 2015 where he kicked off his career as an artist.

In the same year, he became a member of the Amasosha Art Movement which is a collective of Durban Artists that promotes hard work and solidarity among artists in the city.

They exhibited for the first time at the Umhlabelo Group exhibition at Atelier Shop2 which is owned by Akiko Nikija.

In 2019 He joined K-CAP Art Center as a coordinator and a facilitator of Visual Arts and he also had the opportunity to work with Zanele Muholi in Ikhono Lase Natal.

In 2020 he started a gallery at K-CAP and also opened his personal working space, sharing it with young artists within the community. He has also been part of a library project in KwaZulu-Natal, a province in South Africa.
