Description
I began this project with a photo reference generously provided by Emma Francis, an international humanitarian photojournalist. The photograph captures Bahati Gagallo, a 1½-year-old girl from Sololo, Eastern Kenya, cradled in her father’s arms. In the scene, a doctor tenderly removes a bloodied bandage from Bahati’s left leg, which was affected by a large boil. Witnessing this moment deeply impacted me as a painter.
I have meticulously translated this powerful image into a painting. My intention with this artwork is twofold: first, to create a visual narrative that engages viewers and invites them into a dialogue with the subject matter; and second, to express empathy and awareness for Bahati’s circumstances.
Through the medium of painting, I aim to convey not only the physical reality captured in the photograph but also the emotional depth and human connection inherent in Bahati’s story. This painting serves as both a channel for personal expression and a compassionate reflection on Bahati’s challenges.
