As March 2023 begins, visual artists from Africa are presented with a host of opportunities to showcase their talent and receive recognition for their work. Here are some of the grants, residencies, and competitions available for African visual artists to take advantage of in March 2023.
GRANTS
$5,000 PROJECT DEVELOPMENT GRANT
This grant by CENTER provides financial support to a fine art, documentary, or photojournalistic work-in-progress.
Amount: $5000 grant
Eligibility: All of CENTER’s Calls for Entry opportunities accept submissions from national and international photographers and lens-based artists. Work can have been made at any time and work that has been submitted previously may be re-submitted as we have new jurors each year. Work derived from all photographic processes is accepted, as well as mixed media that is photo-based.
Deadline: March 15, 2023

The Innovate Grant for Artists & Photographers
The Innovate Grant distributes (2) $1,800.00 grants each quarter, to one Visual Artist and one Photographer.
Their grant cycles are open (4) times a year (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall) giving you more opportunities to access the support you need.
The application process is also really simple so you spend less time on the application and more time making your important work.
Amount: 1 x $1,800.00 Artist & 1 x $1,800.00 Photographer + other exciting perks
Eligibility: They accept and encourage submissions from applicants 18 years or older, from around the world within the art & photography categories

Boynes Emerging Artist Award
The Boynes Emerging Artist Award is an international fine art competition open to all 2D & 3D emerging artists around the world.
In this Edition, emerging artists from around the world will have multiple opportunities to win $1000’s in cash prizes as well as a 1-month virtual solo exhibition with their partner, The Smart Artist Hub, a feature on their website, publication and so much more.
Amount: $1000 for 1st place winners in the Young Artist & Professional Artist categories + other cash prizes for finalists
Deadline: March 28, 2023
Application Fee: $25 USD for 3 works in the Young Artist Category & $35 USD for 3 works in the Professional Artist category

The Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Prize
The Ruth Borchard Prize invites artists from all backgrounds, established and emerging, to apply. Even if this is your first-ever self-portrait or artistic creation your contribution is welcome.
The artwork submitted must be a self-portrait. All work variations – figurative or abstract, alone or in a group, from life or memory – will be accepted.
The artwork must have been created in the year 2000 or after. There are no restrictions on the size of the work. If submitting a very large work it is suggested that you submit images showing the detail in addition to the main entry showing the whole artwork in one image.
From the artworks submitted, the 2023 prize judges will select a winner of the £10,000 Ruth Borchard Prize and a number of distinguished entries will be acquired for the Next Generation Collection.

RESIDENCIES
Meg Hunt Artist Residency Program
The Wrangell Mountains Center (WMC) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is connecting people with wildlands through art, science, and education in Alaska. The Wrangell Mountains Residency Program aims to support artists of all genres, writers, and inquiring minds. Their organization and community will provide a unique and rustic workspace located in the heart of the nation’s largest national park.
They invite applicants with creative and inquisitive minds who will both add to and benefit from the interdisciplinary efforts at our community hub in McCarthy, Alaska and the surrounding Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. Artists and writers of all genres and stages in their career are encouraged to apply for one of several two-week residencies. The WMC will make selections through a competitive admissions process.

Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program
Well known by visual artists as the “Gift of Time”, the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program was established in 1967 to provide gifted studio-based visual artists with the unique opportunity to concentrate on their work in a supportive, collegial environment for an entire year.
This gift of time allows artists to work without distraction in an effort to break new ground and focus on individual goals.
The Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program’s interest is in strengthening the vitality of visual art in New Mexico and has been a catalyst in broadening community understanding of contemporary art for over fifty years.
Professional visual artists 21 years of age or older, involved in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video, digital media and installation are invited to apply

COMPETITIONS
5th Into the Wild Art Competition
Fusion Art invites submissions for its 23rd Quarterly Art Competition – the 5th Into the Wild Online Art Competition.
For this art competition, 2D and 3D artists, worldwide, are encouraged to submit their best work depicting wildlife. The wildlife theme includes any undomesticated animal species including any wild mammal, wild fish, wild bird or wild reptile. The work can range from realism to surrealism to abstraction and all artists, regardless of location or experience, are encouraged to submit their best representational or abstract wildlife art and photography.
A three-month group online exhibition will be featured on the Fusion Art website starting March 15, 2023.
Prize: Cash prizes will be given to the Best in Show winners in each category (Traditional, Digital & Photography and 3-Dimensional (if the gallery receives 3D entries).

6th “Abstract” Online Art Competition
Contemporary Art Room Gallery is proud to announce its 6th “Abstract” Online Art Competition for the month of March 2023. This is an international competition and artists from around the world are welcome to submit their work. For the Abstract theme in this competition, artists are called to submit their best nonrepresentational artworks in all kinds of concepts and mediums. All visual art mediums are acceptable (painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, digital, prints, fiber art, collage or installation art) except sound and video art.
Award: All winning artists will receive a digital award certificate, First, second and third place will be largely displayed with an article about the artist and their work. Winning artwork (First place) will be on the poster of the show.

14th Annual “Abstracts” 2023 Online Art Competition
Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery announces its 14th Annual “Abstracts” Online Art Competition. 2D and 3D artists from around the world are called upon to make online submissions for possible inclusion into the Gallery’s April 2023 online group exhibition.
The gallery invites artists (including photography & digital art), regardless of where they reside, to apply to this competition by submitting their best non-objective and/or non-representational art.
Prize: The Best in Show winner will receive a cash prize of $100. The cash prize will be paid via PayPal in U.S. dollars. The top 12 winning artists for this exhibition will be promoted and circulated to over 550+ major news outlets, including syndicated Premium News Outlets (ABC, CBS, CW, Fox & NBC affiliated broadcasting/station websites), with inclusion on Google News & Bing News.
