Jethro Longwe (b.1983) is a visual storyteller who uses his paintings to share about society and culture. He currently lives and practices his profession in Lilongwe, Malawi.
His vivid and dynamic art in oil and acrylics pays homage to his homeland. The distinctive style emanates peace and tranquillity and expresses the warmth and calm spirit in the atmosphere of the Malawian culture. Heart-warming portraits, picturesque landscapes, majestic wildlife, traditional ceremonies, and musical instruments, are all brought to life with contrasting and harmonious colours and bold compositions.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Malawi in 2009, and earned a National Diploma in Visual Communication in 2020, at Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town South Africa. Due to his outstanding academic performance in art and design, he was awarded two Academic Scholarships from Ruth Prowse School of Art in 2019 and in 2020. He is also a recipient of the 2019 Grangehurst Winery Art Competition, in Stellenbosch, Capetown, South Africa.
Highlighted group exhibitions in which the artist participated in Cape Town, South Africa, include ‘Identify’ in 2018 at Woodstock Gallery, ‘The Collective’ in 2019 at Gallery Momo, and the State of the Art Gallery Open Exhibition in 2020. In 2021 he participated in the annual art exhibition ‘Art in the Park’ at 4 Seasons Garden in Lilongwe, Malawi.
His approach to art is research-based creating contextual art that reflects and connects with the viewer while being unique to the Malawi culture. His recent series, ‘The Simple Things’, celebrates his culture and community while challenging the viewer to embrace art as part of society.
Most of his paintings are privately owned by local and international individuals. One of his paintings can be found at the Ministry of Mining at Capital Hill, in Lilongwe, Malawi.
